Chairmans Cab – November 2017

That was an amazing AGM! About forty people, members and their better halves, came to the meeting. I presented the activities of the year, going through each of the different portfolios and looking back, it was a really busy year. The year would never have been possible without the work of the committee and again my thanks to them. For all the hard work put in, unfortunately there were no new offers of joining the committee for 2018. Steve Thomas has joined the committee to manage the membership and admin e-mail address of the club, and will be operating from home in Ramsgate. (Thanks SteveJ) It is not too late, if you still want to join the committee you are more than welcome to contact us! We are especially looking for people to help with the Sunday and week-end outings as these are very popular and require some work to make sure they run smoothly.

The full committee list has been updated on the website, and if you need any information, please contact them.

The plans for 2018 are in your hands – please see the Noggins section in the Traction

As the Year End Function is drawing near, please RSVP on the WhatsApp group when it is sent out. This is really important as the numbers are used for catering.

This will be the last issue of Traction for the year, and the next one will be in February next year. So let me be the first to wish you and your loved ones a great festive season and make sure you travel safe and return for a fun filled and exciting 2018.

Keep up to date with the club activities by reading the Traction, going to our website www.4wdkzn.co.za and also checking out the Facebook page and WhatsApp groups.

Chairmans Cab – October 2017

The first year of being chairman of the club has now almost come to an end and the enjoyable experience was only magnified by the great people on the committee – a very big thanks to all of them from my side!

The next cycle starts with the AGM this Thursday, so I urge you to come and enjoy the evening with us and hear about the year past and volunteer for the committee next year J.

Please reply on the WhatsApp group if you are coming, so that we can make sure there are enough braai packs and the fire is big enough! 0 Remember to bring your own bread rolls and salads as these will not be provided by the club.

November Noggins is going to be a planning meeting for the next year’s activities. The idea is that we all get together and give ideas for the upcoming year’s Noggins, long weekend and Sunday outing activities.

The new committee will then be able to plan and schedule the different ideas over the next year and hopefully there will be some ideas left over for the following year.

So please put your thinking caps on and let us know what you as club members want to do during the next year(s)

Thanks again to all the guys on the committee and a special mention to Kevin and Jennifer Govender who have served the club for thirteen years on the committee – they will be missed as we go into the new year.

Keep up to date with the club activities by reading the Traction, going to our website www.4wdkzn.co.za and also checking out the Facebook page and WhatsApp groups.

The Chairman’s Cab – August 2017

As the cycle of the year starts to roll over, as a committee we are already thinking of next year! That process begins in earnest at the October Noggins when we have our Annual General Meeting. Please can you now start thinking of what you would like the club to achieve in 2018, and how you can be part of that process. As mentioned previously Kevin and Jennifer will not be available for the committee for next year, so we please need you to think about joining the committee and also with the popularity of the Sunday drives and long weekend outings, it may be worth having extra hands and minds involved in this important area of the club. The official notice of the AGM and the agenda will be published in the September Traction.

Another topic that will be on the agenda for the AGM is to discuss the future of the Traction magazine in it’s current form. There is a lot of work that is duplicated to prepare the information for the Traction and then to edit the same information to a format that is compatible to the website. Please can you give this some thought and if you have any thoughts or ideas, please e-mail to the committee or to Jenny at  4x4admin@4wdkzn.co.za

Recovery equipment is an integral part of owning a 4×4 and at the last committee meeting we made a list of the essential equipment you should put on your Christmas shopping / gift list. At the year end function (1st to 3rd December at Killarney) we plan to do some practical demonstrations of the different recovery techniques, so get your equipment and come and see how it works.

Noggins is at the same place this month, please see the articles in the Traction for more details.

Chairmans Cab – June 2017

Almost half way through 2017, can you believe how fast time flies when you are having fun!

It has been a quieter than normal June due to the long weekend kindly placed in the middle of the month, so there was no Noggins and Robin led the camp at Hidden Valley.

Some feedback on the discussion on having pets along at the 4×4 Club outings is that for a trial period to the AGM (In October) if the place we are visiting allows pets, you can bring your pet as long as it is consistently on a leash and under control, well behaved and you pick up after your pet.  We will see how this goes and then discuss further at the AGM and make a decision there for the next year.

Talking of the AGM, please start thinking if you would like to join the committee and come and discuss with me or any of the existing or past committee members. Kevin and Jennifer have let us know that due to work pressure they will not be standing for the committee next year. This after un-countable years of service is a big blow to the committee and we will need to find members in the club that are willing to join us to make the club great for all.

Noggins is at the same place in July, please see the articles in the Traction for more details.

Keep up to date with the club activities by reading the Traction, going to our website www.4wdkzn.co.za and also checking out the Facebook page and WhatsApp groups.

The Chairman’s Cab – November 2016

cab-photo-1From the pan into the fire!

Before I start, a huge thanks to Dwayne Van Zyl and the previous chairpersons of the club, you have left me with big shoes to fill.

At the first AGM I attended after moving to Durban, I was voted onto the committee as treasurer, looking back after five years, I am not sure if it was a vote or an instruction! Now I have the title of chairman, and am really looking forward to the year ahead.

The committee is well rehearsed on the workings of the club and the different portfolios are manned by very skillful people.

We have planned a great year ahead and together with the social media interface of the two WhatsApp groups, a Facebook page, the newsletter Traction, the monthly get-together called Noggin’s as well as the monthly planned outing, I am sure you will also have a great year getting to know the people in the club, making friends as well as having a new appreciation for the beautiful country we live in as you explore it in your (or your friend’s) 4×4.

Your input and feedback are critical to the success of the club and please feel free to contact the committee (details in the Traction) to give us your thoughts and ideas.

Last month the challenge took place at Killarney, it was a wet weekend event, enjoyed by all.

Enjoy this issue of Traction and the last weeks to the long awaited year end break.

TnT … Till next time……….

Chairmans Cab – September 2016

Hi there!! I hope you had a fun filled August.
From the club we had a lovely lazy month starting off RELAXed and ending on a HIGH note. We had the relaxing Shu-Shu camp weekend right at the start of the month where I hear some serious soaking took place. Noggins we heard from Gerald how to entertain yourself when you get snowed in. And then we finished the month with a quick zip up and down Sani Pass. Read more on these events a little further along.
September looks to be a quieter month, with the buildup to the yearend function happening the first weekend in December already started. You can look forward to another Noggins evening at our favourite watering hole and then an exciting day trip down the Inanda valley with Dion following Jacques Malan as he shows us a little more of this wonderful area.
Thank you for all the photos that have been streaming in, but please keep them coming. For those new to the club, we want to have new banners for the club made up and these should display the best memories our members have had as part of the club. The more we have to choose from, the better the end result will be. Keep sending them in to my email: dwaynevz@webmail.co.za I look forward to hearing from you (Please keep in mind that my mailbox has a 10Mb email size limit).
Finally, as I mentioned before, we look forward to our AGM taking place in October and in preparation for this I would like you to think of individuals you would like to see serve our club as committee members. This year sees two members standing down and we need to fill the positions they leave behind. So if you can think of someone, discuss with them first and then nominate them during the AGM. You are also welcome to volunteer yourself and once all volunteers and nominations have been listed we will have a vote and select the new members to be added to the committee.
So enjoy another exciting Traction put together for the first time this month by our website guru Jacho and check you on the trail!

Chairmans Cab – June 2016

Hello everyone!! I hope you had a good month of putting those off road tyres to good use.

Looking back on May we had another blessing of a month. Starting off with a bang, we saw and read about the Zingela camp lead by Kevin and already in last month’s traction. We had another slither of a Noggins at Umvoti Mounted Rifles, our first exhibition of the year at Cars in the Park up in Pietermaritzburg took place and we finished the month off with an awesome scenic ride with Dion on the Glendale route. So look forward to some good reading ahead.

I quick summary of what to expect in June would include our Darkest Africa long weekend camp, yet another fun filled evening at Umvoti Mounted Rifles in Pinetown for the June Noggins, the 2016 Durban International Boat & Lifestyle Show where we will have a stand again this year (so come say hi) and then on 2 July we will have the Museum to Museum day outing. So make sure to mark those events on your calendar.

Chairmans Cab – May 2016

Ding dong, another month is gone!! And I hope it was an action packed month for each of you. Looking back on April…

Ding dong, another month is gone!! And I hope it was an action packed month for each of you. Looking back on April we had an awesome month with our second visit to Umvoti Mounted Rifles for the month’s Noggins, and a very interesting evening it was expanding our knowledge on owls and the members convinced for half the night that the stuffed specimen the speaker brought along was alive!! We had our first club gated challenge for the year at High stakes which was very well supported. And our camp late in the month was the return of an old favorite: Zingela river camp, lead by Kevin. Read more a little further along.

For the month of May we have a Noggin set up, again at Umvoti Mounted Rifles in Pinetown as this is proving to be a popular venue. Read the section for details from Robin on the guest speaker. We are gearing up for our PRO event stand at the Cars in the Park, so keep an eye out for us if you attend this and come say “Hi!!”. And then on the last Sunday of the month we have a nice day outing planned with a scenic drive around the Glendale area lead by Dion.

So good reading to follow and check you on the trail!

Chairmans Cab – March 2016

Hi everyone, I hope you all had an adventure packed month.

Looking back on February we had our first Noggins for the year, and although it was a moist evening weather-wise, we had a lekker evening and a good first look at the new venue. Read more in the Noggins section of this month’s edition of traction. Our outing for the month was a gentle ride to the Inanda Dam Wall lead by Kevin. Again, details to follow a little further along.

For the month of March we also have a Noggin set up, this time around at Gary’s Place. Read the section for details from Robin on the guest speaker. The outing for the month will be the ever popular Kosi Bay camp weekend over the long weekend right at the end of the month. I am really looking forward to this trip as this is my personal highlight of the year, so looking forward to seeing you there.

So good reading to follow and check you on the trail!

Keep the 4×4 gear active!

Chairmans Cab – February 2016

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a fun first month of the year. Looking back we had a great turnout at our Start of Year spitbraai, with Gerald doing a masterly at Killarney. Thankfully the weather held and allowed a very good event. Our first day trip for the year, a re-visit of our popular Toti Waterfall run right at the end of the month was also very well supported, with plenty of new faces taking on the trail.

February sees our first Noggins for the year at the new venue that we will be testing and making use of for most of these events this year. Read a little further along on the finer details. The day outing for the month will be a Inanda Valley run, but along a route we have not used in ages, so looking forward to that.

Our first long weekend camp will be the ever popular Kosi trip over the Easter weekend. Keep in mind this falls over the 25-28 March this year, so make sure to start prepping the vehicles and camping equipment for this great annual event.

So good reading to follow and check you on the trail!

Keep the 4×4 gear active!
